Carpentry & Joinery in West Sussex

Carpentry and joinery are at the heart of what JT Builds & Specialised Carpentry does. While building and construction keep the lights on, it’s the quality of the woodwork that defines a finished project — and it’s where our team’s skill really shows. From bespoke staircases in Petworth to fitted wardrobes in Storrington, hardwood flooring in Pulborough to structural timber frames across West Sussex, we handle carpentry and joinery at every level of a project.

Carpentry & Joinery Services

Bespoke Staircases

A staircase is one of the most visible features in any home. We design and install bespoke timber staircases — from classic straight flights with oak treads and painted risers to contemporary open-plan designs with glass balustrades and feature handrails. We work in oak, ash, pine, and softwood depending on budget and style.

Fitted Wardrobes & Bedroom Storage

Made-to-measure fitted wardrobes that use every centimetre of space. We build alcove wardrobes, floor-to-ceiling sliding door units, walk-in wardrobe rooms, and fitted bedroom furniture that’s built into the room rather than plonked in it. Available in a range of finishes from painted MDF to solid timber.

Structural Carpentry & First Fix

All structural timber work for extensions, conversions, and new builds — wall plates, joists, rafters, studwork partitions, and roof structures. We also carry out full first-fix carpentry including door linings, window boards, and stud walls ready for plastering.

Second Fix Carpentry

The finishing touches that transform a plastered shell into a home: skirting boards, architraves, internal doors and frames, window boards, loft hatches, and ironmongery. We work cleanly and accurately — joins are tight and lines are straight.

Hardwood & Engineered Wood Flooring

Supply and installation of solid hardwood, engineered wood, and LVT flooring. We prepare subfloors properly — including levelling and DPM where required — so the finished floor doesn’t creak, bounce, or fail prematurely.

Decking

Timber and composite decking designed and built to complement your garden. We install traditional hardwood, pressure-treated softwood, and low-maintenance composite decking — with built-in lighting, balustrades, and steps where needed.

Bespoke Joinery & One-Off Pieces

Window seats, alcove shelving, study nooks, home bars, media units — if it can be made from wood and built into a space, we can do it. We enjoy the one-off creative briefs as much as the larger projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you supply materials or work from client-supplied materials?

We can do either. For most projects we supply materials and include them in the quotation — this simplifies the process and means we’re confident in the quality. If you have specific materials you want used, we’re happy to work with them provided they’re suitable.

Can you match existing joinery in an older property?

Yes — matching period joinery is something we do regularly in West Sussex, where older properties often have distinctive skirting profiles, door architraves, and staircase details. We can source matching or complementary timber profiles and replicate the original style.

Do you paint and finish the carpentry, or is that separate?

We can include painting and decoration or leave joinery primed ready for your own decorator — whichever works better for your project. We’ll agree this upfront in the quotation.
